An ankle sprain is the most common type of sports related ankle injury. It can happen as a result of the ankle joint moving out of its normal range of motion. This can be followed by sudden twisting or falling that generally causes severe pain and discomfort. Symptoms can consist of immediate bruising, swelling, and difficulty walking. There are three grades of ankle sprains, ranging from mild stretching of the affected ligament to a complete rupture. Relief can be found when the foot is elevated, and this may help to diminish a portion of the swelling. Additionally, it is beneficial to wrap the ankle in an elastic bandage, which can provide the necessary stability as the healing process begins. If you have sprained your ankle, it is strongly recommended that you consult with a podiatrist who can examine and treat the foot for further damage that may have occurred.

Treatment of a Sprain
Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity. Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.
If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.
